PhD Scholarship in Ocean Engineering Development of a Global Ocean Database at Swinburne University of Technology (SUT)

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

BACKGROUND:
Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) is seeking a suitably qualified student to undertake post-graduate study to develop an altimeter database for ocean waves and apply it to investigation of extreme wave events.

About Swinburne University of Technology
Swinburne University of Technology is a large multi-sectoral and multi-campus institution with a stated mission to be a pre-eminent entrepreneurial university from the Asia-Pacific, thriving on new ideas and knowledge and exploiting its intersectoral heritage to create value for its stakeholders.

The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences is host to most of the engineering activities at Swinburne as well as key programs in aviation and photonics. The Coastal Engineering and Physical Oceanography group of the Faculty specialises in research of deep-water and finite-depth wave dynamics, spectral modelling of wind-generated waves, wave breaking and dissipation, air-sea interaction, wave-bottom interaction and turbulence.

PROJECT ABSTRACT:
Over the past 20 years satellite-based radar altimeters have made measurements of ocean wave conditions. During this period of time a total of 7 different altimeter missions have been flown. The combined database represents the most comprehensive dataset ever developed of global wave conditions. This project involves developing a combined database from these separate missions and then applying this to the determination of extreme wave conditions at any location on the global oceans.

The resulting database has the potential to drastically change the way in which ocean wave design is undertaken.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematical Sciences (essential)
  2. Strong analytical and mathematical skills (essential)
  3. A good working knowledge of programming and databases (desirable)
Commencement Date:
March 2008 Scholarship: A$24,815 per annum, tax exempt. Duration – three years

Scholarships and Top-ups at ANU

Thursday, November 8, 2007

he Australian National University Water Initiative and CSIRO Land and Water have developed a Network to address the need for doctoral training in hydrological and other catchment modelling and methods to support Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

We are seeking high quality students to enrol in a PhD program in IWRM at the ANU under the supervision of experts at Australia’s two leading research institutions. Top-up scholarships are available for those successful with APAs or equivalent funds (see icam.anu.edu.au/ANU-CSIRONetwork), as well as a limited number of full scholarships.

Students will have a strong background and research interest in one or more areas including mathematics, engineering, model integration, hydrology, ecology, economics, psychology, sociology, participatory processes and environmental science. Optional coursework is available within the new Master of Environment degree which has specialisations in Water Science and Management, and Integrated Assessment Modelling. Short-term international exchanges with leading partner institutions can form part of the PhD program.

Applications close November 13, 2007.

Contact: Applicants should contact the Network Coordinators, Professor Tony Jakeman or Dr Francis Chiew, to discuss project proposals before submitting an application.

Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS/MIRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS)

Monday, September 17, 2007

Each year, the Faculty of Economics and Commerce is allocated a limited number of Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS/MIRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS). The Faculty's R&RT Committee, chaired by the Associate Dean (Research), meets in December of each year and considers department nominations for the award of these scholarships.

In recent years the Faculty's Scholarship Committee has employed the following criteria when awarding MRS/MIRS and MIFRS scholarships to PhD and MCom by research students:

  • only those applicants who have been nominated by their department and who are deemed eligible by the University's Postgraduate Scholarships Committee are considered for MRS/MIRS and MIFRS scholarships;
  • only those applicants with a confirmed scholarship score of 80 and above are considered for MRS/MIRS and MIFRS scholarships
  • nominations are considered in rank order based on the applicant's scholarship score and research potential
  • priority is given to students who have not previously held a postgraduate research scholarship (i.e. an APA, MRS/MIRS, MIFRS or an equivalent scholarship).

Please note that the criteria used to award scholarships may change from year to year depending on Faculty's MRS/MIRS and MIFRS allocation, and/or on the number and calibre of applications received.

For further details on postgraduate scholarship selection and eligibility, please visit the Melbourne Scholarships Office (SCHOLS Online).
